You’ve probably heard of acupuncture, the ancient Chinese healing art that uses needles inserted in specific points on the body to relieve pain, boost immunity, treat imbalances in the body, and promote overall wellness. Acupressure works just like acupuncture…only without the needles! Instead, the acupressure practitioner uses touch to activate points. While acupressure is less precise than acupuncture, results are similar. Dr. Michael Gach of the Acupressure Institute reports that…
My clinical experiences over the past eighteen years have shown me that accupressure can be effective in helping relieve headaches, eyestrain, sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, tension…ulcer pain, menstrual cramps, lower back aches, constipation, and indigestion.
The list goes on and on! Even without the use of needles, acupressure is powerful stuff. And while acupuncture definitely has its place for more specific treatments, acupressure can be practiced anywhere by anyone. (As a side note, I’ll gladly teach you some helpful points for your animal whenever you have me over for a treatment, as long as you’re willing to learn!)
Acupressure in Animals
The Chinese have been using acupuncture and acupressure in animals for thousands of years–the same ancient texts that describe acupuncture treatments for humans also describe treatments for livestock. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that veterinary acupuncture became a practice in the United States. And, like human acupuncture, animal acupuncture has been subject to the same scientific scrutiny–with the same positive results. Dr. Susan Thorpe-Vargas and John C. Cargill write that studies from around the world have scientifically demonstrated that acupuncture and acupressure for animals can help relieve
cardiovascular disorders, chronic respiratory conditions, dermatological disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, gynecological disorders, immune-mediated disorders, male reproductive disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological disorders, reproductive disorders, thoracolumbar and cervical disc disease.
Most animals readily accept acupressure treatments. There are no scary needles or visits to strange places–just a healing touch performed in the comfort of the animal’s own home.
How Can Acupressure Benefit My Cat (or small dog)?
In a nutshell, if your cat or small dog has…
- pain
- arthritis
- respiratory infections
- digestive disorders
- a weak immune system
- lethargy
- dermatitis
- …or another condition
…then acupressure can probably help! Acupressure is also a great compliment to traditional veterinary treatments and can help with surgical recovery. Results can sometimes happen immediately (especially if the condition being treated is not a chronic one), but usually take around 3 sessions to manifest.
